Towards Sustainable Mangoes
Background
The world is moving towards sustainability as espoused in the SDGs. Businesses need to demonstrate sustainability, that they care for the environment, the care for society and at the same business have to provide economic value. Indeed, an increasing number of companies are being assessed by investors on ESG (Economic, Social and Governance) metrics. Access to markets is also increasingly dependent on the ability to demonstrate sustainability. Indeed, sustainability labelling is becoming a key selling point, especially to a merging class of consumers willing to pay a premium for sustainably produced products. At the heart of sustainability is the ability to trace products from production to consumption. Data collected can then demonstrate how sustainability is met. This capability can also be a source of competitive advantage as companies can have full visibility of the value chain and thus identify opportunities for value chain upgrading. New technologies like blockchain are bringing new capabilities to traceability allowing new business models e.g. Moyee coffee which allows consumers to a cup of coffee to tip the farmer. Another aspect of the sustainable shift is zero waste production. This not only reduced the environmental impact of production but also creates opportunities for developing new lines of business from the waste.
The Challenge
Imagine a future where every step of the mango farming process is transparent, traceable, and sustainable. In this new project, we embark on a mission to redefine the entire value chain of mango farming, from the lush orchards to the final consumers’ plate. Milly Fruits is looking to strengthen its traceability and transparency to outperform the industry standards for future readiness and is thus partnering with us in this project. The primary objective is to establish a robust traceability system that offers unprecedented visibility into each mango’s journey right down to the tree it originated from. Leveraging cutting-edge technology and advanced data analytics, we look to empower farmers, distributors, retailers, and consumers with real-time information about the origin, cultivation practices, and handling processes of every mango.
But that’s not all. We recognize the pressing issue of waste management in the agricultural industry, with approximately 50% of produce going to waste. As part of this project, we will envision innovative waste reduction strategies throughout the entire mango value chain. By optimizing harvesting techniques, improving post-harvest handling, and implementing efficient distribution methods, we aim to significantly minimize wastage and maximize the utilization of each mango.
What if waste became a thing of the past in mango farming? What if we could revolutionize the industry by implementing innovative waste reduction strategies, ensuring that not a single mango goes to waste and maximizing the utilization of this precious fruit? For early adopters of this green transition in mango farming, the benefits are multifaceted. Businesses will gain a competitive edge, positioning themselves as pioneers in sustainable agriculture. Enhanced traceability will instil consumer confidence, as they can make informed choices about the mangoes they consume.
Moreover, early adopters will reap economic benefits through increased market access and potential premium pricing for their environmentally conscious products. As “being green” becomes the norm, the role of early adopters will be instrumental in setting industry standards and shaping consumer expectations. By joining this transformative project, you will contribute to a greener future, not just for mango farming, but for the entire agricultural landscape.
